The customer is a keen gardener who wanted a patio that felt part of the garden rather than just a paved area. We installed a full Indian sandstone pattern pack with a custom semicircle cut-out for an inlaid planting bed — so the garden could grow into the stone, not sit beside it.
Laying the Pattern Pack
Indian sandstone pattern packs use a mix of slab sizes to create a natural, varied finish. Getting the layout right before committing to mortar is essential — we dry-lay the pattern first to make sure the proportions and joints work across the full area.

Steps & Levels
The garden drops away from the house, so we built sandstone steps with solid Yorkshire stone risers to connect the patio level to the garden below. New picket fencing was installed either side to frame the entrance to the lower garden.

One of the slabs contained a striking dendritic fossil formation — manganese oxide crystals that form branching tree-like patterns in the rock over millions of years. It ended up as a feature piece in the finished patio rather than being cut away.
Finished Result
The completed patio gives the customer a proper outdoor space that works with the garden rather than against it. The semicircle bed softens the stone and gives somewhere to plant climbers that will eventually frame the whole space.
